I-CIVIC Engagement: Pedagogies for a Resilient Generation

I-CIVIC is a research and training project funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) – Staff Exchanges programme.

The project brings together an international and multidisciplinary network of researchers and practitioners to explore the challenges of democratic engagement, civic participation and digital literacy in contemporary societies.

Project Vision

I-CIVIC addresses the growing concern of democratic deficits among young people in Europe, including declining civic participation and the spread of anti-democratic narratives in digital environments.

The project aims to strengthen democratic resilience by fostering critical thinking, inclusivity and active participation among younger generations.

Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, I-CIVIC brings together perspectives from the social sciences, education and digital studies, combining academic research with participatory and community-based practices.

In doing so, the project seeks to better understand the complex relationship between education systems, community dynamics and democratic engagement, while developing innovative and inclusive responses to current societal challenges.

Collaboration Across Sectors

I-CIVIC promotes strong collaboration between:

  • universities and research institutions
  • policymakers
  • cultural organisations
  • local communities

A key focus is bridging the gap between education systems and community environments, involving actors such as:

  • museums
  • libraries
  • cultural associations
  • local governance bodies

Objectives

The project aims to:

  • Identify gaps in democratic education and civic participation
  • Develop innovative pedagogical tools and frameworks
  • Promote critical digital literacy and resilience to misinformation
  • Create scalable practices that can be adapted across Europe

Work Packages

The I-CIVIC project is structured around six Work Packages (WPs), which organize the project’s activities into coherent thematic and functional areas.

Each Work Package brings together a set of objectives, tasks and expected results, and is coordinated by a leading institution in collaboration with the project partners.
