The University of Siena is integrated within the historic fabric of the city, with its departments and facilities distributed across several locations inside the ancient city walls. Secondment activities are typically hosted in one of the main academic hubs, each specialising in different disciplinary areas:

  • San Niccolò Complex, mainly dedicated to Humanities
  • San Miniato Pole, hosting scientific and medical departments
  • Polo Didattico Mattioli, focused on Economics, Political and Social Sciences, Law

Travel Logistics: How to Get to Siena

By Air

The nearest international airport is Florence Airport (FLR) “Amerigo Vespucci”, located approximately 80 km from Siena. Other nearby options include Perugia Airport (PEG) “S. Francesco d’Assisi” (118 km) and Pisa Airport (PSA) “Galileo Galilei” (120 km).

From Florence Airport

From the airport, you can take the tramway Line T2 to Florence Santa Maria Novella Station. From there, direct bus connections (e.g., FlixBus or Autolinee Toscana) are usually the most convenient and time-efficient option.

By Train 

Siena is connected to the national railway network (Trenitalia), although routes often require one or more changes and may take longer than bus services. 

Getting Around 

As Siena’s historic center is a restricted traffic area (ZTL), mobility within the city is mainly based on walking and local bus services (TIEMME), which connect the different university sites.

During your stay at the University of Siena, we encourage you to fully utilize the opportunities for collaboration and academic engagement. 

Core research activities
  • Collaborative Research & Publications: You will work closely with your faculty supervisor and the local research team, taking part in regular meetings to advance joint research projects and contribute to co-authored publications. 
  • Academic Engagement: Seconded participants are encouraged to engage with the host institution’s academic environment by delivering seminars or workshops (in collaboration with the Teaching and Learning Centre). and attending lectures, seminars and other academic events. 
  • Access to Facilities and Resources:  You will have access to a variety of specialised facilities and resources, including research laboratories such as METEMlab (Arezzo Campus) and the University’s library system, supporting both literature review and data analysis. 
  • Networking and Cultural Experience: The secondment also offers valuable opportunities to build professional networks within the academic community, while experiencing the cultural and historical richness of Siena and Arezzo.

 

Accomodation 

A wide range of accommodation options is available within approximately 20-minute walking distance from the main university locations. Participants can choose between hotels and private rentals depending on their preferences and budget.

Several hotels are located close to the city centre and university sites, including: 

  • 3-stars hotels such as Hotel Santa Caterina, Hotel Porta Romana, Hotel Chiusarelli, Hotel Moderno and Hotel Tre Donzelle
  • 4 and 5-stars options such as Hotel Palazzo Ravizza, NH Siena and Grand Hotel Continental
